My Journey to ABCH

My journey to becoming an American Board Certified Haircolorist has been one of the most rewarding achievements of my career. Its a journey that's been filled with hard work, passion, and dedication to mastering the science of hair color. As I reflect back in my 30+ years behind the chair and reflect on my path, I want to share with you the steps I took, the challenges I faced, and why I'm so proud to have earned this certification.

The Beginning of my Hair color Journey

I'll be honest, my journey did not begin with hair color. When I first began my career as a stylist over 30 years ago, I was eager to learn everything I could about hair. However, I didn't have a mentor who could guide me or share any in-depth knowledge about the science behind hair color. Looking back, I realize many of the techniques I was taught were passed down without a deep understanding, but rather a set of methods that had been repeated.

As the years went by, I realized my passion was hair color, how it worked, mastering the science of formulation, and learning to utilize every aspect of it to it's full potential.

Why ABCH Certification?

The ABCH Certification isn't just about passing a test: it's about mastering a skill set that sets you apart from others in the beauty industry. It's a mark of excellence that gives your clients the confidence you have taken and gone that extra mile to perfect your knowledge. The Certification process involves an in-depth knowledge of hair color theory, color formulation, and above all, hair health, all essential for any haircolorist looking to elevate their work. For me, becoming ABCH was my way to ensure I could offer the best possible service to my clients. I wanted to be more than someone who does hair color, but who truly understands everything involved to create the most beautiful and healthiest hair possible.

The Certification Process

This was the hardest process I have done since beauty school. It required so much studying(which I had to relearn), practical prep and experience, and 2 written exams including 200 questions and color scenarios. these exams challenged your knowledge of color theory, chemical processes, and techniques to achieve certain end results. It wasn't about just memorizing facts, but applying that knowledge to real life salon experiences. One of the most challenging parts was the practical exam, where I had to showcase formulation skills and ability to apply a variety of techniques. I had to articulate my process clearly to judges while being timed, which added an extreme amount of pressure.

Overcoming Challenges

Like any journey, mine had it's challenges. There were many moments where I doubted myself and wanted to quit, but I knew I had wanted this accomplishment for over 10 years and I was going to learn and grow even if I failed. The amount of time needed to study and prep was difficult to do while keeping a busy schedule as a mom and employee, but was so worth it when I finally achieved my Certification.

Continuing Education

One of the most important things that I've learned on this journey and that becoming ABCH isn't where I stop learning, its just the beginning of a new adventure in the beauty industry. It's always evolving and I must keep learning or get left behind. I'm committed to keeping up with the latest color techniques and trends to ensure my clients always receive the best service possible.

Final Thoughts

Becoming an American Board Certified Hair colorist has been an incredibly fulfilling experience and accomplishment. It has deepened my passion for hair color, enhanced my skills and vaulted me into becoming a hair color educator. I am proud of myself for working hard to achieve this and look forward to helping my clients feel confident and beautiful with every hair color service.

If you're a stylist considering this path, I would highly encourage you to take that leap. It's challenging, but a rewarding journey that will give you confidence and set you apart in this industry.
